Abstract:

Introduction: In previous studies the appearance of vitiligo following Occupational Exposure has been defined. This study evaluates high risk Occupational Exposures before the onset of disease among patients with vitiligo. Methods: All vitiliginous patients refered to dermatologic clinic of Imam Hospital, were asked about age of onset, recent and previous occupations, risky Occupational Exposures, autoimmune systemic disease and family history. Laboratory evaluation about diabetis melitus and thyroid disease was performed. Results: Of 135 patients included in the study, 70 (51.85%) patients had an occupation and 65 (48.14%) were unemployed. Of 70 Occupational cases, 23 (32.9%) had a risky Occupational Exposure. The most prevalent risky Occupational Exposures were Exposure to detergents, oil colour, print dye and pesticides. Occupational cases were divided into two groups: with risky Occupational Exposure and without risky Exposure. In risky Occupational Exposure group, the ratio of men to women was significantly higher. There was a significant difference in distribution of the disease between two groups and extremities were significantly more involved in risky Exposure group. Age at onset was significantly lower in non-risky Exposure group. None of the patients with risky Occupational Exposure used skin protction. Conclusion: High prevalence of risky Occupational Exposure may indicate it as a risk factor for vitiligo. Knowledge about these risky chemicals and prevention, may reduce Occupational vitiligo.

Abstract:

Introduction: The present study investigated the relatively high concentrations of natural radionuclides in raw material that used in ceramic manufacturing, and estimated the Occupational Exposure due to these activity concentrations. Material and Methods: A high-purity Germanium detector was used to determine naturally occurring radionuclides in raw materials that used in ceramic manufacturing. Activity concentrations of these materials lead to potential radiological hazards due to gamma and alpha radiation. These hazards were evaluated in the present study. Results: Maximum activity concentrations was 5844, 1065 and 41 Bq/kg for 226Ra, 232Th and 235U in powdered quartz; however, maximum activity concentration for 40K was 1868 Bq/kg in colors. These activities were observed to be exceeding the exemption limit. Pancreas received the lowest dose (i. e., 0. 02 mSv/y), while skin received the highest dose (i. e., 0. 044mSv/y). Internal hazard index (Hin) was reported as 53. 74, which exceed the recommended value (Hin≤ 1). Alpha index was 42. 4 which led to over Exposure. Representative level index and excess lifetime cancer risk were 0. 00062 and 0. 641 respectively. The total annual external dose was 2. 62 m Gy/y which led to 1. 83 mSv/y effective dose. Radiological hazard due to radon inhalation was 1. 53E-06 mSv/y. Conclusion: Due to the high activity concentrations of raw materials (especially zirconium compounds) and consequently the associated high dose, specific regulations must be applied in the ceramic industry in Egypt.

Abstract:

Occupational Exposure to blood and body fluids is an important hazard for health care workers, which places them at a high risk for blood-borne infections including hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and human immunodeficiency virus and results in psychological and emotional stresses. Several preventive measures have been proposed including pre-Exposure (e.g., education, use of standard precautions, use of needle protective devices, and vaccination) and post-Exposure (e.g., post-Exposure prophylaxis and early detection of disease) prevention. In this article, the importance of Occupational Exposure to blood and body fluids and the basic concepts of Exposure prevention and management are reviewed.

Abstract:

Objective: In the last 50 years a significant decrease in human fertility has been observed. Infertility is a common problem affecting one in six couples. The World Health Organization defined infertility as the inability of a sexually active couple to achieve pregnancy despite unprotected intercourse for a period of greater than 12 months. In 30% of infertile couples, the male factor is a major cause. There is accumulating evidence that Occupational Exposures contribute to male infertility. Men suffering from infertility problems may do well to look at their occupations, where Exposure to certain substances and situations may be a contributory factor, if not a direct cause, of infertility. The purpose of this review article was to determine the association between male Occupational Exposures and infertility.Materials and Methods: The studies examined by the review include those published in the international scientific literature since 1990, and were identified through the search of MEDLINE using selected keywords. Results: Occupational factors have been divided into 5 groups: 1-Physical factors (Heat, Radiation, Noise), 2-Chemical factors (Smoking, Endocrine disruptors, Solvents, Drugs, Pesticides, etc.), 3-Psychological factors (Psychological disturbances and emotional stresses, Irregular work hours), 4- Exposure to Metals and Welding (Cadmium, Mercury, Chromium, Lead, Nickel, Copper, Manganese, etc.), 5-Physical load and Ergonomic factorsConclusion: Several Occupational Exposures have known or suspected deleterious actions to male reproductive function. For some specific agents, such as heat, ionizing radiation etc. the evidence is strongly supported in well-designed epidemiological studies. Additional studies need to be done to ascertain the effects of Occupational factors on male infertility. Until then, men and their employers should work together to minimize Exposure to these factors.
